Earth was believed to have been formed 4.6 billion years ago while Humans evolved 200,000 years ago. With globalization and the race for modernized civilization and growing economy competition, human race made severe damages to the environment. Assuming and condensing the lifespan of earth into 24 hours, we’ve just lived on this paradise for 4 seconds and look what we’ve done to Mother Earth.

Soilless Gardening (Hydroponics)

Some scholars hypothesize the ancient Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, as the hydroponic system. Fruits and Veggies which grow best hydroponically include beans, celery, tomatoes, strawberries, spring onions, cucumbers, radish, herbs, spinach, amaranth, methi, coriander and microgreens. Home-made soilless gardening one can actually try with pipes combination, empty jar, tray etc.

Nutrient-rich water is highly efficient growing medium in the urban kitchen garden as it doesn’t require soil, sophisticated gardening tools or spaces and can be implemented in terrace, balcony or backyards. Also we are skipped from the the risk of having bugs, insects, worms, flies, bugs and the soil-borne diseases.

Soil Less Farm Garden, DIY Gardening Tips

Several approach of soilless gardening include:

  • Wick: The plant container is placed above the solution reservoir and 2-4 wicks suck solution from the reservoir to the plant roots. This works best for light feeder herbs and lettuce.

  • Drip: Nutrient solution is pumped up from a reservoir to the top of growing media through tubing and dripped onto the roots. In this type of system, only challenge is that the PH needs to be periodically checked.

  • Water Culture: Plant is placed in containers with roots extending into the nutrient solution. an aquarium pump, air pump or action of water falling provides oxygen to the solution.

  • Aeroponics: Roots are suspended in the air and misted with nutrient solution.
