Red Bull has confirmed that Liam Lawson will continue to replace Isack Hadjar alongside Max Verstappen at the Madrid Grand Prix. Yuki Tsunoda will return to Racing Bulls. The decision looks simple, but it reveals how the team is managing risk in the middle of the season. Hadjar injured his wrist during the summer break. Red Bull says his recovery is progressing well, but he is not yet ready to race. Lawson stays because he finished P7 and P14 in his last two races. Those results are not revolutionary, but they spare Red Bull from putting an unprepared driver into a high-pressure environment. What interests me is not the medical detail. Watching Lawson from the technical area, I notice he keeps a stable pace when given a supporting role. When compared directly to Verstappen, he tends to lose ground after about 15 laps. So the Madrid race is less about whether Lawson can win and more about whether he can stay close enough for Red Bull to use flexible strategy. The standings from the last two races suggest Lawson is not yet a regular podium contender. But the numbers have been contradicted by race reality before. Red Bull already has chassis data, pit-stop procedures, and car setups optimized for Verstappen. Keeping the same driver means the team does not need to rebuild its system because of one injury. Verstappen will have to carry most of the workload. That risk will not appear in race results until late in the race.
